what i was writing on my phone Nov 9, 2016;

Does America recognize her face?

Alight in misery and disgrace.....

The righteous mourn...

We will not allow the triumph....

Of fear and ignorance...

No matter their strength....

Blind hatred ...

Can Not silence the words ....

On the righteous lips ////  ~Carrie Able

soul inside

I never thought...

A time would come...

Where I would be...

Happy again.

For years to pass...

Alone I felt...

Better off...

Than with...

What others dealt.

How is it so...

That one could see...

My soul inside...

And set it free.

light beyond

Light beyond the shallow darkness...

I see you..

Without fear..

Engaging your opposition..

Igniting and uniting...

Minds.

I see you...

With love...

Distinguishing the blind hatred...

Purported by fear....

I see light beyond the shallow darkness...

And it ignites me. ~Carrie Able

teaching

2 years ago when i was teaching the free art classes for kids 8-12 @bklynlibraryI have always loved teaching this age group because they are dexterous and developed enough to understand complex ideas but not old enough to have already decided art isn’t cool or not for them... It was from my experiences teaching at the public libraries and programs like the boys and girls club that inspired me to begin our own free art classes for kids @carrieablegallery

new poem

It was within the cage of my own body...

I taught my mind it was free...

Steps I may not walk...

But miles I run ...

Preparing for flight...

Through the prison of physical weakness...

My strengths were born...

And I fly without ever leaving the ground...

self portrait with roy

This is the first Oil painting I completed after the death of my father.I was a senior in college and had just gotten kicked out of Duke Universities Visual Art Major "distinction program" for painting too realistically.Painting at the time was not at all popular let alone realistic painting. The full title of the series is "The Triumph of Realism Over Abstraction" as it references abstract works being triumphed by an intruding figure. It is one of only a few self portraits I have done.It is quite a large painting and the face is about two times life size. I don’t prefer work that heavily references another, however in this case it was necessary to convey how I felt.

forever in wait

Should the wind...

Call you to sea...

I have faith you...

Will be back to me...

Wandering calls...

For you to make...

If your happiness...

Is at stake...

And should that...

Breeze take you...

For longer days...

My love will be...

Forever in wait...

prince

A prince came...

Embarking on a field...

He came seeking...

Internal regard...

For his whole life...

Based on measurements..

Of external success...

He spoke to the clouds...

He spoke to the moon...

He listened to the sea...

Lady wisdom...

Called through the breeze;

Be it rich or poor....

Your value comes from within...

Your riches...

Hold value...

When mending the struggles..

Of universal kin.

art exists

I do not believe in the notion of the tortured artist. I do however see greatness in artists who have a physical need to create on a daily basis almost as if they were taking medication. They are creating for themselves as a comfort, but in the purity of that action the product becomes a comfort for others.

Art exists to provoke imagination and to show a reality that could be but is not readily viewable to our human eyes

Art exist to connect us with emotions that we may not otherwise find tangible.

I believe that the strongest art is polarizing, provoking either great love or great hatred.

The day I moved to NYC I met Chuck Close

The day I moved to NYC I met Chuck Close who is a remarkable human being and artist. He sufferers from Heprosopagnosia, more commonly known as face blindness, he jokes that is why he is so nice to everyone. His propensity to paint and study faces is driven by his disability. He recognizes his students by their paintings and not their faces. He lost his father at a young age and says that was good preparation for later in life when he became disabled because he knew that even after suffering a tragic loss he would find happiness again. I shared with him an image of a painting of mine and told him I could empathize as I too lost my dad at a young age and suffered from physical illness. He assured me physical constraints as well as self made constraints are always good for your art, and I replied "Good because I just signed a lease on less than 200 square feet!"
