drawing the ladies...

Im a fan of figure drawing from life using grey paper & white + black graphite.  It is easier to begin with a neutral surface and then isolate shadows and highlights.

This is also helpful with oil painting to begin with a neutral surface, which is why I typically always begin painting an entire glaze of a mid tone color before begining.
